All arguments stem from the fact that Christians and Jews believe different things about Jesus. The clear anger between Christians and Jews in The Merchant Of Venice can be traced back to the event of the Holocaust. The Holocaust took place between 1941 and 1945. It was the extermination of more than 15 people including Jews. The event of the holocaust was what caused the anger between Christians and Jews. The occurrence of the Holocaust could evoke sympathy with a modern audience, as they are more likely to sympathise with Shylock who is representing the Jewish tribe. A modern audience is likely to sympathise with a Jewish character, as they know what the Jews went through during the Holocaust so they will feel sympathy for the character. During The Merchant Of Venice sympathy is lost and gained by Shylock who represents the Jews. I am going to explore where and how this sympathy is lost and gained throughout Act1 Scene3, Act3 Scene1, and Act4 Scene1. First I will look at how sympathy is lost by shylock then I will look at how Shylock gains sympathy in each scene. At the start of Act1 Scene3 shylock loses sympathy of the audience when he says to Bassanio: Oh, no, no, no, no: my meaning in saying he is a good man is to have you understand me that he is sufficient This quote shows that Shylock is a typical Jewish stereotype by putting money above everything else. The word sufficient points out the importance of Antonio have sufficient money that shylock can take. This portrays Shylock as being selfish and greedy therefore losing sympathy with the audience. When Antonio enters the scene, Shylock makes a comment aside, to the audience. He says: How like a fawning publican he looks, I hate him for he is a Christian, But more for that in low simplicity he lends out money gratis This quote alludes to the fact that Shylock doesnt like Antonio, not just because he is a Christian, but because he lends out money gratis which means without charging interest. Again this is showing shylock as a typical Jewish stereotype losing sympathy with the audience. Also in the speech he makes aside to the audience Shylock states that: If I can catch him once upon the hip, I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him This statement again, will cause the audience to lose sympathy with Shylock as he is showing his evil side. Shylock is saying that if he gets the chance to kill or harm Antonio then he will. Does the word fat imply something that will occur later in the play? Near to the end of the scene Shylock shows his evil side again by talking about Antonios forfeit. He says: Be nominated for an equal pound of your fair flesh to be taken in what part of your body pleaseth me This quote shows that Shylock wants to take flesh from Antonio instead of taking money as the forfeit. The word pleaseth shows how sick he is being pleased at taking flesh from Antonios body therefore losing sympathy with the audience. Although all these quotes point to the fact Shylock loses sympathy with the audience, there are parts of Act1 Scene3 where he gains sympathy from the audience. The first point where sympathy is gained is at the beginning of the scene where Bassanio asks Shylock to dine with him. Shylock replies: I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, but I will not eat with you, drink with you nor pray with you The words you show that there are more Christians than Jews on the stage. This creates sympathy for Shylock, as he cant mix with Christians. This shows social segregation. Later in the scene Antonio talks to Shylock about what Shylock is really like, he says: The devil can cite scripture for his purpose. An evil soul producing holy wit ness is like a villain with a smiling cheek. A goodly apple rotten at the heart. O what a goodly outside falsehood hath! This speech talks about how Antonio thinks Shylock is putting on a false front saying he may look kind but he is rotten at the heart. Also he calls Shylock a devil. These things can create sympathy for Shylock as he is being called names that may not be true. Just after Antonio makes this speech Shylock makes his own speech. The last comment that is made in this scene causing the audience to lose sympathy with Shylock is when Bassanio reveals homoerotic undertones again. This quote will cause loss of sympathy for Shylock as he is braking up a relationship and the audience will view this as being evil and uncaring. After studying the quotes I have taken from this scene, I think there is more evidence of not sympathising with Shylock. We learn about how he is too ill to stay in court and how he nearly lost all his belongings yet he was still going to go through with killing Antonio and I think that is cold-hearted and cruel. Therefore I do not sympathise with Shylock in this scene. After studying the text thoroughly and taking into account the quotes I have chosen to support both sides of the argument I have come to the conclusion that I do not sympathise with Shylock in this play. He has shown that he can kill an innocent person all because he doesnt like their religion and I think he is cold-hearted and a killer. However, I do sympathise with him when he is being called names by the other characters, as I dont think it is fair to call someone just because of their religion. Although there are times when I sympathise with Shylock in this play, overall I do not sympathise with him because I dont like his actions he takes against other characters because of their religion.

Few people have made it across the boarders safely. However, if they fail to escape and they are captured by the North Korean military they will be tortured or even executed in some cases. Most all of the authoritarianism governments that I know have a strong following from their people. Whether the masses like the leader because he is helping the economy or helping a food shortage situation is another story. Personally I think these people in these countries are so afraid of what the leader might do to them or their family that they just do what they are told. Of course these people have never had it any other way. They don’t know what it is like to have a democracy. They don’t know what it is like to voice their opinion. The people in North Korea didn’t get to choose where they wanted to be born. If we had a free world I’m sure when some of those people realized that there are better governments in the world that won’t control your every move then they would leave the country. It is just not that easy for anyone to just get up and go to China or South Korea. People born into democratic societies should be thankful that they can enjoy the freedoms that they have, because there are other parts of the world where the idea of having rights is completely out of their control. There is no possible way the people can over throw the government in North Korea. North Korea has too strong of a military. One way the government will get overthrown is if it is done internally. The second way it will get overthrown is if they go to war with another country and they lose their power. â€Å"Indeed, research on Korean communism has become the pursuit of an avocation, meandering off the mainstream of contemporary social science. The Iraqi people that have voted so far on the new leader of their country is not a man that the United States wants to have them run their country. Sadaam Hussein would still be in power and have complete control of Iraq if the United States didn’t take him out of power. The military balance in South Korea is much stronger then North Korea. In case of another North Korean invasion, the South Korean military only has about 600,000 people while the north has around one million. However these numbers are misleading because of the fact that these numbers don’t include the superior training, equipment, and logistical support that the south has. Kang: Pg 262) â€Å"The South has outspent the North on defense in the last 15 years, if not longer. † (Kang: Pg 262) North Korea’s nuclear threats are a grave concern for South Korea and the rest of the world. The Soviets were building bombs in the 1950’s and China developed a nuclear bomb in the early 1960’s. North Korea didn’t start trying to assemble nuclear weapons until South Korea became a threat to them because they were overtaking North Korea in a lot of areas during the 1970’s. Kang: Pg 266) â€Å"North Korea’s significance to the world with a bomb is much greater than without a bomb. † (Kang: Pg 266)In conclusion, there are many reasons why the authoritarianism regime in North Korea is still up and running to this day. There is simply no way that anyone can overthrow the government unless it is done internally. The people located in these authoritarianism regimes usually like the leader, and agree to what he says. These people didn’t choose where they wanted to be born just like nobody in a democratic state had an opinion as to where they would like to be born. It is sad that most all of the money spent in North Korea is aimed toward building up a better military and not helping out with the economy or the food shortages. The only way these people know how to live is to be ruled by a dictator. Until the United States or some other world power takes down North Korea, the authoritarianism regime will continue to govern.

I know the only reason I’ve been able to practice this skill is because my dad has always been very pro-active about equipping me with the career-oriented skills needed to be successful. Now that I’m a college student living two states away, getting his advice has become a little more tricky, so naturally I turned to the only place I knew I could get reliable and up to date information quickly, the web. With so many websites and apps available to advise people on career oriented techniques and information, it took no time at all to identify what today’s evolving economy calls for in terms of resumes. The days of resumes with stiff, formal language and generic formatting are long gone. Future employers want to know you, not just your education and experience. Today’s resumes are all about showcasing your talents and skills and demonstrating why you’ll be advantageous to the company in question. Here are five tips on how best to market yourself through your resume 1. Use active language when describing your past experience or positions. Be as descriptive as possible. Were you a cashier at a local store? Talk about the experience you gained in customer service and human resources. Don’t simply say, â€Å"assisted customers by ringing them up.† So dull. Instead say, â€Å"formed close connections with regular customers, enriching their experience at the store and overall contributing to a strong company identity by emphasizing great customer service.† This language can help a future employer see that you gained legitimate experience through this position. 2. Emphasize your relevant coursework and your outside-of-the-classroom experience. This is something that is so frequently overlooked when creating a resume. As a college or high school student you are bound to have encountered class projects that demand real world career skills. My freshman year of college I took an entry level political science class that required the class to work on all aspects of an event and participate in all areas of citizenship. I went door-to-door with fliers, gathered signatures, worked in coalition with a local non-profit, advertised an event, and successfully executed a community service event with the help of my class. All of these skills are marketable and valuable. If you’ve ever had a class with this sort of real world application, use it to your advantage. Future employers will be impressed that you’ve taken advantage of the educational experiences you’ve had. 3. Customize, customize, customize! There’s nothing worse than submitting a catchall resume with nothing tailored to the position you’re applying for. Only include what is relevant to the job. Look at the job description or title and then look at your composite list of experiences and pick and choose what you think they’ll want to see. You may also choose to leave out certain pieces of a job summary in order to make it more relevant to the position. My suggestion is to make one giant resume with all of your work experience, education, extracurriculars, and skills and then pick and choose and copy/paste to formulate the perfect resume for the specific position. Your resume should read like a narrative, i.e, I began here, got this experience, moved onto here, got that experience, etc. By the time the employer is done reading this they should be able to have a comprehensive view of you, and the direction you’re going. There’s really no trick to this, and it may seem pretty self explanatory, but by visualizing your resume as a story you may be able to have greater insight into the way you should physically format your information. Start with your most recent experience and work backwards. It should seem like a timeline on Facebook. You’re the main character and all of your experience is helping to develop you. A quick tip to jumpstart this, sit down and try to write two concise sentences that summarize your resume. Start with who you are, what experience you have, and the direction you wish to go. This will create a concise vision for you, and once you’ve worked to narrow down all you’ve done to two sentences , only the truly pertinent stuff will remain. 5.   Be concise. Try not to go over a page in length. This is tried and true when it comes to resumes. Recruiters and employers are frequently flooded with resumes and applications and would rather not be forced to flip the page. Great, you have a lot of experience, but do they really need to read about every last job you have had? The answer is no. As I’ve mentioned in some of the sections above, they really just want to see what is most applicable to the position they’re hiring for. I recognize that not everyone will have a lot of job experience in the specific field they’re looking for work in, but look for other ways to market yourself, perhaps through your skills and hobbies. Finally, do the 10 second scan test; do you have buzzwords for the position’s description? Does your expertise and experience give a concise perspective on what you can offer? In the year 1991, month of October, the fishing boat, also referred to as Andrea Gail, docks in the port of Gloucester which is in Massachusetts with an exceptionally poor yield. They seem to be extremely desperate, and under the direction of their Captain Tyne, they all decide to go on a fishing expedition into the deep seas. This time, they go beyond their normal fishing territory and leave a thunder storm behind their trail. At first, their efforts bore no fruits, but this does not d iminish their hopes. They head further to a place called Flemish Cap where they have a breakthrough through which they have some success in catching fish. (Perfect Storm 120-135). The book does not go along the way to describe these scenarios and only covers a small part of what is in the movie. It only covers the part of the act where the vessel undergoes and eventually turns to explain about the storm. This makes the film to be more preferred by the viewers since it is captivating and makes one glued just by watching it from the start till the end. What is similar about the film and the book is that the boat crew does everything to make sure they get a fair catch. This is so as to make enough money to feed their families since they are generally the sole bread winners of their families. (Welkos 124-130). As the crew, continues with their fishing trip they begin to face problems and their ice making machine breaks down. They have to rush back to the harbor if they would sell their catch before turning stale. A debate ensues about selling through the storm or whether to wait for it to come down and the team comes to an assumption that they would try and risk the raging storm. What is not known to them is that the place they want to sail through is inhabited by a hurricane which is a product of the merging of two weather fronts by which the boat crew underestimates by all means. What is the relationship of the Four Noble truths to the Eightfold path? The heart of Buddhist teaching is found in the Four Noble Truths. These truths are what Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened about when he became the â€Å"buddha† or â€Å"enlightened one. † These truths are shared by all the different groups, schools of thought and divisions within Buddhism. The Four Noble Truths are: 1. the truth of suffering – life involves suffering or dissatisfaction. Even the most privileged lives involve suffering or dissatisfaction of some sort. 2. he truth of desire – suffering is caused by desire, specifically unenlightened desire 3. the truth of the cessation of desire – when unenlightened desire is ceased or eliminated from life, suffering ceases as well 4. the truth of the 8-fold path – desire is enlightened through right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right understanding and r ight resolve The Four Noble Truths support the common characterization of the Buddha as a doctor or healer. He assesses the life's condition, makes a diagnosis, and provides a prescription for the cure. Life involves suffering, even for those who lead privileged lives. Bad things happen, people get sick, loved ones die, things don't go as planned, and so on. How does Buddhism explain karma and reincarnation without a soul? Karma is the concept that the individual's actions determine his fate, whether in this or in a future life, and that every action has to be balanced in some way. By doing certain actions, certain energies are set in motion, which bring certain effects. It is a way to restore balance in the Universe, and is not punishment for one's actins. Reincarnation is the rebirth of the soul in a new body, while Karma affects the new body and determines the circumstances into which it is born. Both of them can explain a lot of things in each one's life. A life of comfort and success means that the person performed good deeds in a previous life, and a life of difficulties, failure and adversities is a retribution for negative past actions. It is said that it is the soul that reincarnates, but what is the soul? This is an ambiguous term. If someone says, â€Å"my soul reincarnates† or â€Å"my soul is eternal†, he is actually saying that there are two ifferent entities. There is he, and there is his soul, which means that he is not the soul. Forgive me for the comparison, but it is like saying, â€Å"I have a pair of shoes†, â€Å"I have a car† and â€Å"I have a soul†. It is regarded as a possession. This means that it is possible to be â€Å"with a soul† and â€Å"without a soul†. D oes this sound reasonable to you? If a soul is a â€Å"possession†, then who is the owner? This owner must be more important then the soul! people encounter different situations and live in different circumstances, deep within all are indivisible part of the same One Spirit. This Spirit is not touched or affected by situations or circumstances. It means that from the viewpoint of the Spirit, karma and reincarnation are illusory. When one is able to realize this understanding on a deep level, one goes beyond karma and reincarnation. When the Consciousness of the Spirit is â€Å"awakened†, through concentration and meditation, one realizes that he is an integral part of the eternal and undivided Spirit. He experiences a Spiritual Awakening, and then both reincarnation and karma lose their meaning, power and reality. What is a Bodhisattva? The word bodhisattva means â€Å"enlightenment being. † Very simply, bodhisattvas are beings who work for the enlightenment of all beings, not just themselves. They vow not to enter Nirvana until all beings enter Nirvana together. A BODHISATTVA IS an ordinary person who takes up a course in his or her life that moves in the direction of buddha. For me, Little Buddha is also such a movie. However, as I reflect on the powerful depiction in this movie of Siddartha's transformation into the Buddha under the bodhi tree, it seems clear that the powerful force responsible for shaking Siddhartha up and humbling him was none other than the unforgiving truth of impermanence. Every living thing must change and ultimately perish. This of course is a disturbing and negative truth. However, this powerful negative truth was transformed into an equally powerful positive one when he realized that not just he, but that also all living things, even plants and insects, were all suffering from and bound by this same truth. Ultimately, he saw that all life is one. I believe the Buddha's great compassion developed out of this awareness of universal suffering. In Little Buddha, this truth, though perhaps somewhat obscured by the search for the reincarnated teacher, is nonetheless powerfully and unforgettably portrayed. I highly recommend that you see this movie.
